RESNA Assistive Technology Certifications
Why Become Certified?
Technology is dramatically changing how practitioners assess, design, and implement solutions that meet the most complex needs of people with disabilities. Employers, funding agencies, and consumers want to know that you are both knowledgeable and keeping up with the times. Validate your skills and receive industry recognition by proving that you meet a bench mark level of training, experience, and continuing education.
RESNA offers national certification for three specialties. Each certification promotes a standard for recognizing qualifications and validating broad-based knowledge required as the foundation for safe and effective service in the field of assistive technology. These standards aim to enhance service provision to people with disabilities who are seeking technology applications to maximize their ability to function in their environment.
Certification ensures that professionals attain a certain common level of competence in their ability to perform direct consumer related services in Assistive Technology. Interested stakeholders can find certified AT professionals and learn about ethics, RESNA Standards of Practice, and the Professional Standards Board by following the links for Ethics and Governance.
The credential achieved through each certification program promotes quality assurance for the consumer, is a source of pride for the service provider, and promotes a standard of professional practice for the field. Thousands of rehabilitation engineers, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech and hearing pathologists, suppliers, educators and other professionals continually maintain and renew certification.
The ATP certification recognizes demonstrated competence in analyzing the needs of consumers with disabilities, assisting in the selection of appropriate assistive technology for the consumer’s needs, and providing training in the use of the selected device(s).
The SMS certification is a specialty certification for professionals working in seating and mobility. While the ATP is a broad-based exam covering all major areas of assistive technology, the SMS exam is focused specifically on seating, positioning, and mobility. The program is intended for clinicians, suppliers, engineers and others involved in seating and mobility service provision.
