(Wheelchair under the guidance of the laser rangefinder subsystem): The wheelchair moves from a point near the driver’s seat to a point near the rear driver’s-side corner of the motor vehicle. Front- and rear-facing sensors on the wheelchair detect the van, and also watch for obstacles in the wheelchair’s path. The user has access to a computer interface in the motor vehicle, which can be used to initiate or override automatic control of the wheelchair. The user is currently facing sideways and is situated in the middle of the vehicle. The driver’s seat will rotate and move forward when the wheelchair is stowed, placing the user in the typical driver’s position.
