One of RESNA's Board Members Perry Loh, ATP, shares information about himself and why he's excited about the upcoming RESNA 2023 Annual Conference.
How did you get your start in assistive technology?
I do not have a clinical background, but wanted to help people with physical disabilities in Latin America with mobility and independence. As I learned more, joined RESNA, and became ATP certified, I developed a passion for applying technology, sometimes very simple technology, to improve people's lives.
How have you seen the field of assistive technology develop over the years?
In Latin America there has been significant progress in clinical knowledge and advocacy. Private manufacturers and distributors have complemented the work of RESNA, WHO, ISWP and other NGO's to promote knowledge and improve provision practices. Clinical and commercial conferences are great opportunities for networking and knowledge transfer as well.
What have been your volunteer roles within RESNA?
I was elected to the Board in 2020, and in addition to that I am currently the conference chair for the RESNA 2023 Annual Conference in New Orleans. Previously, I was the Chair of the International SIG. I’ve been a RESNA member since 2011.
Why do you choose to volunteer with RESNA?
I find volunteering with RESNA to be both enriching and fulfilling. I have met, and continue to meet, fascinating people. The fact that we share common goals is a delightful plus. The diversity of membership makes our collaborations stimulating and productive.
Do you have any advice for AT professionals or those new to the field?
Beg, borrow or steal to attend the 2023 RESNA Conference in New Orleans this July. Introduce yourself to me and to as many others as possible. You will be greeted with open arms. Connect with colleagues, learn about other disciplines, find a career mentor; if you reach out you will not be disappointed.
Why are you excited for the RESNA 2023 Annual Conference?
To be back live with our fellow RESNA volunteers is exciting. I'm looking forward to learning about innovations in our various fields, to hands-on opportunities at the experience hall, and above all, to meeting new RESNA members. The fellowship and professional development opportunities are unparalleled.
