The next meeting of RESNA Standards Committee on Inclusive Fitness will be January 5, 2016 virtually via GoTo Meeting from 9:00am-11:00am PST. Meetings are open to anyone; voting on documents requires membership.
Committee Update
The RESNA Standards Committee on Inclusive Fitness (RESNA IF) last met during the RESNA Annual Conference in Denver, CO. Attendees who could not be there in-person were able to participate virtually. 14 people attended and discussed updates on action items, membership fees, and outreach efforts. The specific new business included: the 2016 IHRSA conference, ASTM Meeting updates, details regarding the Inclusive Fitness Symbol survey, 3rd party certification of ASTM F3021/F3022 and review of ongoing advocacy work. The committee plans to meet twice a year to continue developing guidelines and standards for the inclusive fitness community.
Committee Goal
The goal of the committee is to help fitness facility operators, trainers, and staff members increase the accessibility of their facilities for people of all abilities. RESNA IF will identify materials that are currently available to address the accessibility of the fitness environment, including layout, equipment, programming and staff/trainers. As additional accessibility barriers are identified, RESNA IF will develop standards and/or guidelines as necessary to create a more inclusive fitness environment. The RESNA IF work program dissemination will assist people with disabilities in identifying fitness facilities, trainers, and accessible equipment that will meet their specific needs. RESNA is a standards developing organization accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The RESNA Assistive Technology Standards Board is the U.S. Technical Advisory Group to ANSI for the development of ISO (International Organization for Standardization) standards pertaining to assistive technology and other products for persons with disabilities.
