The RESNA Standards Committee on Emergency Stair Travel Devices is seeking to recruit new members. It is important to the work of the committee that we have participating members from various areas of expertise. In particular, the committee seeks participation from the following areas:  

 

In 2013, the Committee published the American National Standard known as ED-1 Volume 1: Emergency Stair Travel Devices Used by Individuals with Disabilities.  Currently, the Committee is seeking to make revisions to Section 1 of the standard:  Track-Type, Controlled-Descent, Manual Ascent Devices.  The standard covers emergency stair travel devices (ESTDs) used by individuals with disabilities. These devices are used to enable evacuation by individuals with disabilities from high-rises, but may be used in any structure having stairs as part of the evacuation route. Individuals with disabilities (occupants) work with other individuals during use, such as first responders, other life safety personnel, co-workers, family members, or others (operators).

 

RESNA is a standards developing organization accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The RESNA Assistive Technology Standards Board is the U.S. Technical Advisory Group to ANSI for the development of International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards pertaining to assistive technology and other products for persons with disabilities.
