This is the first official meeting of the RESNA Standards Committee on Air Travel (ATAT). ATAT has held planning meetings. Various stakeholders participated in these meetings and discussed the need and scope of a standard to address the issues people with mobility impairments are encountering during air travel. The committee plans to meet quarterly via Web Ex over the next year to continue developing the Draft RESNA Standard on Assistive Technology for Air Travel – Vol. 1 Protection of Mobility Devices for Air Travel – Section 1 – Powered Mobility Devices. An American National Standard – Project Initiation Notification (PINs) was submitted for this work.
The goal of the committee is to create air travel standards and guidelines for powered wheelchair: design, labeling, information cards and airport personnel handling and training procedures. RESNA is a standards developing organization accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The RESNA Assistive Technology Standards Board is the U.S. Technical Advisory Group to ANSI for the development of ISO (International Organization for Standardization) standards pertaining to assistive technology and other products for persons with disabilities.
It is important to the work of the committee that we have participating members from various aspects of air travel and consumers with impairments. This includes Airline Industry Experts, Consumers/Caregivers, Disability Organization, Representative, Government, Mobility Device Manufacturers, Research & Development, and Test Labs, Testing Assessment, & Clinical Experts. The committee is currently seeking participants from all interest categories previously listed.
