Has your certification expired? If so, you cannot use the certification designation unless you are officially reinstated. You may reinstate your certification provided that your certification has not been expired for more than 4 years.
To reinstate, you must:
- File the on-line reinstatement application.
- Pay the reinstatement fee of $250.
- Submit additional CEU; 0.25 CEUs for every 3 months the certification has been expired, up to 2.0 CEUs (see examples below).
Please note: The requirement for mandatory additional 0.25 CEUs goes into effect 30 days AFTER the expiration date, so a 0.25 CEU penalty is assessed 30 days AFTER certification has lapsed.
The ATP designation may not be used in any communication until the applicant has received official notification that the certification is satisfactorily reinstated.
Has it been more than 4 years since your certification expired?
If so, reinstatement is no longer an option. You must apply as if you are a new applicant, meet the current eligibility requirements, pay the exam fee and take the exam again. Please note that eligibility requirements and exam content are subject to change over time.

Continuing Education Requirements for Reinstatement
With your reinstatement application, you must include documentation of continuing education, showing that you have been keeping up with the field. Education must be related to the provision of assistive technology for persons with disabilities.
The continuing education requirement is:
- What is required for a standard certification renewal: 2.0 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) minimum OR two AT-related academic credit hours at a recognized academic institution of higher education. 2.0 CEUs = 20 hours of continuing education.
- PLUS, a reinstatement penalty based on your certification expiration date of 0.25 CEUs for every 3 months the certification was expired, up to a maximum of 2.0 CEUs.
We accept CEUs (continuing education units) from IACET-accredited providers, professional associations (i.e. RESNA, APTA, ASHA, AOTA), academic institutions, and state licensing boards. Documentation must list the attendee's name, the name of the course, the dates of the course, the number of CEUs earned, and the speaker/sponsor signature.
If the documentation does not include the number of CEUs earned, it will not be accepted. Contact hours and in-house training hours are not eligible for reinstatement continuing education.
EXAMPLE #1
Alex’s ATP certification expired on June 30, 2022. Alex filed a reinstatement application one year later, on July 1, 2023. In addition to the 2.0 CEUs required for a standard renewal, Alex must submit the following additional CEUs:
July 1, 2022 – September 30, 2022: 0.25 CEU
October 1, 2022 – Dec 31, 2022: 0.25 CEU
January 1, 2023 – March 30, 2023: 0.25 CEU
April 1, 2023 – June 30, 2023: 0.25 CEU
Total Penalty: 1.00 CEU
Alex must submit 2.0 CEUs + 1.0 CEUs = 3.0 CEUs, or 30 hours of continuing education in assistive technology.
EXAMPLE #2
Dani’s ATP certification expired on March 3, 2018. Dani submits a reinstatement application almost 4 years later, on January 17, 2022. In addition to the 2.0 CEUs required for a standard renewal, Danie must submit the following additional CEUs:
2.0 CEUs
Dani must submit 2.0 CEUs + 2.0 CEUs = 4.0 CEUs, or 40 hours of continuing education in assistive technology.
Why? It’s 0.25 CEUs for every 3 months the certification has been expired, up to 2.0 CEUs. Since Dani’s certification has been expired for four years, they must submit the maximum amount.
