Abstract: Electromyography (EMG) controlled power wheelchairs may enhance autonomy in daily activities for users with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) but can be challenging to learn. To address this, Limbitless Journey, a serious training game, was developed to promote better control over the temporalis-EMG interface. The game features eye-tracking for hands-free calibration and surface electromyography to maximize autonomous control. A qualitative “think aloud” study evaluated the game’s eye-tracking calibration scheme against traditional mouse-based calibration across three participant cohorts. Gameplay feedback collected through the Game User Experience Satisfaction Scale and the System Usability Scale supports the game’s training potential.
Learning Outcomes: List three applications of surface EMG for bio-sensing and proper surface EMG placement. Explain the advantages of gamified training for rehabilitation.
