Abstract: The HAAT model is well suited to guide assistive technology professionals in the process of assessing workshop environments. Workshops are used for both employment and hobbies by people with disabilities. Workshop environment case studies for workers with disabilities will be evaluated as group exercise. We will consider an array of tasks necessary to do woodworking, welding, mechanical repairs, electronics and other duties in a workshop. Medical professionals may have a bias that people cannot work effectively in a workshop after they experience a disability. After assessing the human, activity, and context of workshops, assistive technology options will be presented that enable people with disabilities to work to their full potential.
Learning Outcomes: Participants in this general session will become familiar with limitations to using hand tools needed for common workshop tasks. They will be able to identify new and existing assistive technology devices to overcome those barriers. Participants will be able to perform assistive technology worksite assessments on workshop environments and be knowledgeable about technologies available for workers with mobility impairments.
