This is a 90-minute workshop offering hands-on opportunities.
Abstract: The field of adaptive gaming is growing at a rapid pace, attributable in part to the development of new adaptive controllers and modifications, along with greater attention toward accessibility, game settings, and options for people with disabilities to participate in video gaming. However, it is important for providers to be familiar with an approach to the adapted video gaming assessment, including knowledge of adaptive gaming solutions and when it is most appropriate to implement them. This presentation/workshop will provide a hands-on overview of common adaptive gaming solutions available to individuals with disabilities. Participants will cycle between multiple stations to try different adaptive gaming technology with direct instruction from experienced providers in the field of adaptive gaming. Participants will also be provided with hands-on instruction on how to set up different controllers, use accessibility settings, and make adjustments to the adaptive gaming setup.
Learning Outcomes: After the session, participants will be able to describe at least five different adaptations or adaptive controllers available for individuals with physical disabilities. By the end of the session, participants will be comfortable setting up and using one or more adaptive video game controllers. After the session, participants will be able to list at least three strategies for modifying an adaptive gaming setup for a user.
