This interactive workshop will highlight select RERC TechSAge projects focused on developing supportive technologies for people aging with mobility disability. Sanford will detail the latest advances with the SmartBathroom – a state-of-the-art bathroom laboratory that features mechanically adjustable features and an array of sensors to assess and optimize performance of transfers. Rice will describe updates in the development and testing of an automated fall detection device for wheelchair users. Mumma will present the “TechSAge Telewellness Tool” - research-driven guidelines for designing wellness classes delivered via video conferencing for older adults with disabilities. Lachs will present preliminary findings from the “Digital Assistance in a Box” field trial, assessing how to best support the use of digital home assistants (e.g., Amazon Echo) and connected devices among older adults with mobility disability.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will identify three different types of bathroom transfer performance data that can be useful in identifying support needs of an individual (Sanford)
- Participants will be able to describe the need for an automated fall detection device designed for individuals who use a wheelchair or scooter (Rice).
- Participants will be able to describe three strategies to ensure wellness classes delivered via videoconferencing are accessible, safe, and engaging for people with disabilities (Mumma)
- Participants will be able to describe three opportunities for digital home assistants to support individuals with mobility disabilities at home and resources to facilitatedevice use and adoption (Lachs)
