Abstract: Evacuating from a residence during a fire often requires climbing over obstacles, which can be challenging or impossible for people who use wheelchairs and scooters (WC/S). Research shows that people with functional limitations disproportionally die in residential fires and a gap exists between their perceived evacuation abilities and actual preparedness. To address this, an evidence-based, online educational program for WC/S users was developed based on insights from a focus group of WC/S users and firefighters and a scoping review. The active learning self-management program includes use of assistive technology (AT) to support prevention and management of fires, personalized evacuation planning, and strategies for managing life after a fire. Twenty-three participants who use WC/S enrolled and completed the online education program. Participants reported increased confidence in evaluating emergencies, improved fire safety awareness, and adopting specific safety measures.
Learning Outcomes: Describe the key components of a fire prevention and management program for people who use WC/S. Describe types of technology to utilize to prevent and manage fires and efficient evacuation for people who use WC/S.
