2024 Colin McLaurin Distinguished Lecture: The Evolution of Universal Design

Each year, RESNA recognizes a scholar and leader who has made substantial and innovative contributions to the field of rehabilitation engineering and assistive technology through research, education, and/or practice through the Colin McLaurin Distinguished Lectureship Award.

Join RESNA's Colin McLaurin Distinguished Lectureship Awardee Edward Steinfeld, Arch.D., FAIA for an engaging conversation on The Evolution of Universal Design on Thursday, October 17, 2024, 5:15pm Eastern. 

The concept of universal design has evolved since its formulation in the 1990’s. Dr. Steinfeld was present at the beginning and continues to be a thought leader in this field. He will share his observations on the concept and examples from projects conducted by UB’s Center for Inclusive Design and Environmental Access. 

Learning Outcomes: At the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the difference between accessible design and universal design. 
  2. Define how the concept of universal design has evolved. 
  3. Identify the evidence base behind accessible design and universal design. 
  4. List the resources of the IDEA Center at the University at Buffalo.

Edward Steinfeld, Arch.D., FAIA

Edward Steinfeld is a Distinguished SUNY Professor of Architecture at the University at Buffalo and the founding Director of the Center for Inclusive Design and Environmental Access. He is internationally known for his research and publications on accessibility and universal design. He has written or edited 10 books including Universal Design: Creating Inclusive Environments, the first textbook on the subject. During his long career, he has collaborated extensively with faculty at the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences at UB and served on the RESNA Board of Directors. For 20 years he directed the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Universal Design and the Built Environment.
